Hello,

My G4 Sawtooth appears to be dying a slow death (I know that J21 has a
problem, so I no longer use it), and so I experience occasional
problems with it, most of which are memory-related. The latest anomaly
I've noticed, that's just started happening recently, is that, from
time to time, waking the computer from sleep results in a blank gray
screen, and no response from keyboard or mouse. This forces me to
restart the machine, which I do by pressing the small restart button on
the tower's face (hate having to do that!).

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this behavior, and how I might
troubleshoot and hopefully correct it? And please don't advise me to
Google anything ;)

TIA, Eric
I know this is a common problem that many people have had. But so far
i havn't read if anyone has resolved it. The problem is booting
between os9 and osx. You can boot/reboot into osx and os9 without any
problems. You can boot from osx to os9 without problem. but when you
boot from os9 to osx, the monitor remains black and you have to zap
the pram in order to get the machine to boot into osx. Even booting
from osx to a os9 cd requires that the machine have a pram zap before
the machine can be rebooted into X. I have tried two version of X.
Both Panther and Tiger. Same problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have an old Lombard with the stock 6 GB drive in it, and if I put a larger
drive in it I know it would be a serviceable machine for several things.

However, when I installed OS X (can't remember which version but I think it was
10.3), OS X did not see and would not charge the battery. The thing will not run
under battery power under OS X at all. However, the battery charges fine and the
computer will run on battery power under 9.2.2 which was already installed. What
gives with that?
What's the usual charge time 0->100% for a Lombard ?

Just switched on the G3 Lombard (400 mHz, 10.3.9.) after a month away
and the battery was completely flat. On the charger it is charging very
very slowly - after 4 hours it is at 65% and saying 2 hours to go to
full charge.

So is 6 hours from 0 to 100% a "normal" charge cycle time for this unit
in OSX - I don't remember it being so long under 9.2.2. a few months ago.

Cheers
Wake-on-Lan on OS 9.2.2

Hi, I have two G4's, each with OS 9.2.2 and OS X (10.2.8). I'm trying
to wake them up with magic packets -- one works, the other doesn't. As
far as I can tell, I've configured all the relevant settings the same
(i.e., checked "wake on network administrative access," made sure
tcp/ip and appletalk are set to use Ethernet, etc.).

The 733MHz G4 always wakes up when I send it the magic packet (I'm
using wol.exe from http://www.gammadyne.com/cmdline.htm on a windows
machine). The Dual 1-GHz G4 does not wake up if I've gone to sleep
from OS 9.2.2, but it DOES wake up if I've gone to sleep from OSX
10.2.8, so that seems to rule out that the network card isn't
compatible or that there are connection or hardware problems.

Are there other settings that I should be checking are identical? Or
does anyone know of certain configurations or extensions that prevent
wake-on-lan?

Background: I am trying to wake the machines at night for a daily
backup. Users often run them in OS9 when they need to run certain
apps. I thought about that maybe these apps are leaving files open,
etc., but I've tried going to sleep right after a clean boot and still
can't wake it up. In all cases, tapping the mouse or the keyboard
wakes the computer up fine.

Other info that may or may not be relevant: both machines have DAVE
filesharing software, v.4.1. For everything I could think to check,
the DAVE settings are configured identically (except for the name, of
course). Also, both machines are configured for DHCP and the "DHCP
Client ID" setting is blank. Both are getting registered on the DHCP
server with the correct MAC address.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!
Is there a way to see the battery bar while using Classic apps? I hate
having to switch back to OSX while working on a lengthly document in
Office98.

The last time I owned a mac laptop was in 1998 and it ran OS 7.6.1. It
had such abilities while in its 68K based os.
Thanks,
Fix for "Sleep of Death"?

I've bombarded the Apple discussion boards on this to no avail - it is as
though Apple does not believe that it exists...

I have an "flavored" iBook G3/300 that I got for my little one. Shortly
after getting this unit it started to spontaneously go to sleep immediately
after booting up (or waking up for that matter.) After dozens of reboots
I managed to get OS 9.1 installed (it has OS 9 on it), but no dice, it
still happened. I zapped the PRAM, reset the PMU and turned off ALL
energy saving options. I even started it with all extensions turned off -
Still the problem occurs. I get a few reboots from it without going to
sleep after I do a PMU reset, but the problem always comes back.

Has anyone solved this problem or even know what is going on? I've
been thinking of dropping the change and actually paying for an Apple
service call, but others that have done this have never gotten the
problem solved and I'm hesitant to spend the money for nothing.

Is there any fix at all for this?
sleep of death? on iBook G3

I have an iBook G3/300 I recently got that has vanilla OS 9 on it. I
installed Netscape 7.02 and now when it boots up, as soon as everything
is up and ready, it goes to sleep with a blank screen. I hear the fan
going, but it won't awaken. I can "hard power" it off, do the 3-finger
solute reboot, etc. but it still goes right to sleep. If I start up with
all extensions off, it still boots up, then goes to sleep, if I boot from
the CD-ROM (to restore the original system), it boots up and goes back to
sleep. I've zapped the PRAM and done the PMU reset, no dice. I've
searched for this on the web and at Apple's site; I've found lots of
references to the "sleep of death" on the web, but no solutions and there
isn't even a mention of it on the Apple support pages that I can find.
Is this just the best known bug that Apple refuses to admit to or am I
looking in the wrong places?

How can I fix this thing?!

thanks,
Powerbook noisier on AC adapter

My powerbook 1.5 aluminium makes quite a bit of noise from the
circuitry/memory/processor when set to Highest in processor performance
and running Classic. The noise is loud enough to be annoying. It's like
the electronic noise you get from memory but I think it comes from the
motherboard. I noticed that is stops when running off the battery only,
also if I put the ac adapter to my ear it makes the same noise. I wonder
if this is some kind of interaction between the switching psu and the
load the powerbook puts on it. I have tried different adapters and they
are all the same.

Has anyone run one of these powerbook off a external battery or other
true dc supply and noticed if the noise is still there? Also any ideas
what the minimum voltage the powerbook needs to run?

I would be prepared to find an alternative power source for the
powerbook, maybe an old fashioned one with a big transformer in it if it
would make a difference.

Thanks
Lombard powerup problems

Hi!

Strange problems on 333mhz Lombard:
When powerbook gets power from adapter (before I turn it on), green led
turns on and stays on, and power button doesn't react - so boot is
imposible, screen is dark.
It takes several plugging in and out for powerbook to became normally
turned of, then I can turn it on.

At the same time (but not necessarily connected ?!), another problem: I
had OS 8.5.1 (because I replaced hard from older powerbook), and Lombard
used to boot from this system, even though it shouldn't boot form 8.5.1
and there was 9.2.2 installed. Startup disc control panel didn't help,
so I removed older OS.
Now it seems processor at first can't find the OS. On power up, there's
"?" icon and some nasty clicking of hard drive. It boots after 15 sec.
or so.

Any ideas will be appreciated...
Won't sleep in 9.2

Recently installed a PCI USB card in a G4 desktop MDD. When I have 9.2
running (not in Classic) to use PageMaker I find I can't put the machine
to sleep. Apple System Profiler reports that sleep is disabled because
of the PCI card installation - even when there is no powered-up unit
connected to the card. There's no problem with sleep using Panther. Any
ideas of a way round this please?
iBook not charging

Here's an old clamshell ibook from my friend. It's stuck at 4 percent
charge according to the display.

Runs ok as long as the ac adapter is plugged in, but powers-off as soon
as it's unplugged.

Battery is new, about four months old. Up until a few weeks ago, had
been charging.

I've gone through the published power management reset procedure a
couple of times (power off, unplug ac adapter, remove battery, press pmu
reset switch, plug in ac adapter, insert battery, power on). Obviously
this also reseats the battery connector.

Still it doesn't charge. Light at power adapter socket glows orange
while the system is on and plugged-in (green during part of bootup, as
is normal).

OSX.3.7, but same behavior on 9.2.2 before upgrade to OS X.

I'd say there's a not-worth-fixing problem in the power management,
but...

Any ideas to resurrect this machine?
I have a PM 8600/300 running OS 9.1, and at midnight exactly, my hard
stays asleep. Eventually, everything goes back to sleep again. Does
anyone know why it's happening?

G4 keeps complaing that "the case is open"!

'ello all,

I have what is, quite possibly, the most odd problem of all Mac-time:
Everytime I try to put my Mac G4(sawtooth) machine to sleep in OS 9 I
get:

"Your computer cannot be put into sleep until the case is closed.
Please close the case and try again."

As you may have guessed, of course the case is closed. Here's the
weird part: It sleeps in OSX, but not in 9.2.2. I've tried taking
everything off, except for the mouse, still no luck. I've booted into
a different partition that also has OS 9.2.2(just bare, nothing else{I
use it for my "Classic" mode}) and it still does it there. I've even
opened the case and tried to put it to sleep, just to see if that did
anything...but it didn't. I even tried resetting the PMU, but still,
nothing. :(

I've searched the net, and found *nothing* on this. I have a buddy who
works at Apple, their database doesn't even have anything on this.

I've opened the case, looked for any sensors or something that may be
blocked, and allow the G4 to think the case is open, couldn't see
anything.

If anyone has any suggestions, or stuff to try, I'd be so very
grateful...(I hate having to turn the Mac off every night rather than
put it to sleep)

Thanks in advance,

OS9 and OSX - Help break my PRAM zap addiction!

Specs:
B&W G3 rev.1 (or whatever you call the first build)
Partitioned HD- two large ones with OSX on one and OS9 on the other.
Small third drive is all fonts.

Basically, everything works great here. X runs fine, 9 runs fine.
Switching between them is the problem. Going from X to 9 is no
problem. From 9 to X, though, I have to zap the PRAM in order to get
it to boot. It doesn't even get to a login screen. The HD spins a
bit, the monitor is black and nothing happens. Zap the PRAM and
everything launches fine. And I wouldn't mind this so much, but it
requires having my old ADB keyboard on hand instead of my preferred
USB one. And it messes with the clock, too

The machine has a non-X compliant OrangeMicro SCSI card. Unplugging
that does not help. Unplugging peripherals does not help. Powering
down between the OS9 to OSX boot does not help.

Anyone know the key to stopping this? Notes here are helpful, but
don't get to the heart of the matter:
http://resale.headgap.com/osxnotesbw.html

(FYI, this machine was a total pain when it came to installing X and
doesn't like to boot from the CD drive. But firmware is up-to-date and
I know of nothing more I could do that might change this behavior or
the X-boot problem.)

Regarding the notes at headgap, how would I know which partition 9 is
on?

Thanks for any help!

sleep from the sleep timer, won't sleep from a menu command, won't
sleep when the cover is closed. It ignores the sleep timer, crashes
from a menu sleep command, crashes when the cover is closed.
Eternal Sleep on iMac

Running OS X 1.5. If I've opened Classic to view a Classic document,
then closed all docs and aps and left the computer, it will go to
perpetual sleep. No key stroke will awaken it. I have to shut down and
restart with the button.

And . .sometimes on restart I'll get a blank white screen. I believe
I'm getting the smiley face, but the screen goes blank. Requiring
another button shutdown and restart. Then it boots.

On days when I do not activate Classic, computer sleeps and awakens
normally.

I've read somewhere that in OS X running Classic, reawakenings are
SLOW. If they're talking about 5 to 10 minutes, I haven't waited that
long before forcing a restart.

Does anybody recognize this symptom? Is it normal or potentially
dangerous>? I've already lost one hard drive on this iMac and the new
one is one month outside of it's 90-day warranty.

Hello,
I have a Power Mac 8600 with OS 9.1 and 256 mb of Ram and a 604e 300 Mhz
processor. For some reason when I went to shut it down the mouse cursor
turned into a watch dial with the hands going around and around. The
computer would not shut down. It stayed this way for over an hour and I
finally had to pull the power cord out of the back of it to get it to turn
off. There seems to be no other way of powering it down when it decides it
wants not to. When I powered it back on, the first aid program ran and I
clicked on done. After a few minutes the cursor again turned into a watch
dial and there it sets again. Cannot do anything at all with it except move
the mouse cursor ( watch dial ) around. I can't power it off. What do I do
?

Pismo Battery Mystery

I've just bought a Pismo in beautiful, hardly used, condition, but
there's one minor anomaly: despite being fully charged, the battery only
shows one light.

When running from battery the control strip displays more time left than
it should, 12 hours at full charge. It seems to be holding a fair amount
of juice though and can comfortably run a full-length DVD movie in
fullscreen.

When connected to the power supply and fully charged, the lightning bolt
occasionally appears in the battery menu item for a few seconds.

The manual suggests doing a full battery discharge to cure unusual
behaviour but it's had no effect in this case.

Have also tried PMU reset.

Anyone seen this before? (OS 9.2.1)
I haven't used my PB 3400 for about a year and recently tried to use
it again for OS 9 stuff. Apparently the PRAM battery has gone as I'm
loosing the date and experience strange behaviour with start and sleep
after setting the date manually. So I left the date alone and switched
off all energy saving options using AC anyway. In fact, the behaviour
now is quite normal.

I'm thinking about replacement of the battery, but it seems not
necessary for future sporadic use of the PB. I don't care for the date
since I don't have relevant documents on the PB. Perhaps I should even
disconnect the battery. Any ideas?
