Weird one... (couldn't unlock from sleep)

I hate it when there are irreproducible faults, although in this case I
guess it's better than a permanent serious one. I went to wake up my
Powerbook G4 (running 10.4.something), which I have set to require a
password to wake from sleep. I enter my password and it tells me wrong name
or password. OK, must have mistyped (that first character getting lost
sometimes thing maybe.) Didn't work. Tried a couple of more times, typing
very slowly. No joy. Eventually got the "failed too many times" error.
OK, I have a couple of other accounts on the machine, so I told it to switch
users and tried a different one. Same problem -- wouldn't take the password
and eventually got the "too many times" error. Wondering how I'm going to
recover from this (envisioning I'm going to have to find my master password)
I shut it down by pressing and holding the power switch -- at least that
worked! Restarted and everything's fine. Go figure.
iMac shuts down for no reason

> Hi all,
>
> My iMac G5 (10.4.10) keeps on turning off for no reason. I'll walk away
> from the computer, come back an hour later, and it'll be shut down. It
> almost always happens when I'm not using it, for whatever that's worth.
>
> About 2 years ago, the same computer would shut down every time it went
> to sleep. Apple replaced the power supply and that solved the problem.
>
> This time, there doesn't seem to be any connection to sleep mode. I've
> left it asleep overnight, and it's still been on in the morning. On the
> other hand, I know it's shut down minutes after I walked away from it,
> when it was still awake.
>
> I've run disk repair and the hardware test since this started happening,
> and both showed no problems.
>
> Does anyone have any thoughts about what this might be? Is there
> anything on the computer that I can check for clues (logs or anything
> like that)?
>
> Thanks for any help you can offer!
> -ez

Gremlins? Is it a coincidence that the same thing started happening to
my kid brother's G5 iMac the day before yesterday? Even though his is
still under AppleCare, he couldn't afford to be without it for the few
days, so he moved his Intel iMac purchase up a few weeks (was going to
buy after Leopard came out), did the Migration Assistant thing, and
took his in for service -- we should know the cause in a few days.

I had a similar problem with a Wintel box and a PowerMac G4 a few years
back -- in both cases it turned out to be power cords/plugs that just
weren't seating properly. That's now the first thing I check.
I'd get in touch with Apple. There is a known issue with these batteries
Application Support update. Now the computer runs generally hotter than
it did before and the fan runs non-stop. Running 10.4.10.
Rebooted, reset the SMU, repaired permissions - no change.
Hi -

here are 2 external harddisks for backup purposes. The one from
LaCie runs fine but not the one from Philips.

PSyncX works like this:

1) Scanning Destination Directory

2) Scanning Source Item (and here the Philips harddisk goes to sleep)

3) copying items (this doesn't wake up the harddisk)

The Philips customer service is not interested.

I searched the archives but using the keywords

"external harddisk usb sleep"

didn't yield anything useful.

One could build an Applescript to touch the harddisk every minute,
but perhaps there is an easier way?

10.4.9 is told to solve some USB problems - not this one,-)

In the System preferences>Energy saving I didn't mark "Put the harddisk(s)
to sleep when possible"*

*The expression may be not exactly translated from my German system.

Thank you in advance
SeaMonkey and sleep mode, with OSX

preface: I use SeaMonkey (SM), the continuation of the abandoned
Mozilla Suite.

post:
Any Mac OSX SM users have problems with their machine staying asleep?

I rarely ever turn my iMac G5 off, I just put it to sleep. SM is ALWAYS
running. Sometimes the machine wakes back up before I even leave the
room, sometimes I go away for an hour and come back and the machine is
awake with just the screen asleep. This has been going on since maybe
January (I do every OSX update the week it comes out and every SM one also).

I recently started quitting SM, and the problem seems to have gone away.
I know there's only a few OSX guys that read this group, could you try
duplicating my problem, or verifying if you are already "sleep prone
non-quitters"? ;-)

GW
SM 1.1.2 on OSX 10.4.10 on both iMac G5, and PowerBook G4
ps
I used to have a problem where if I clicked "get messages" too soon
after waking the machine up (i.e. network conn not reestablished yet) SM
would crash the whole User Account. I'd have to log-out, log-in. That
has either gone away or I finally learned to count to ten in my head
before clicking anything.

>
> Recently there have been a few occasions when my iMac has not gone
> to sleep when it should. I have tried explicitly telling it to
> sleep via the Apple menu but it just ignores me. I tried logging
> out and telling it to sleep from the login screen but still no
> luck. I ended up rebooting to restore correct behaviour.
>
> I suspect it may have something to do with USB. I recently
> started using my machine to recharge a mobile phone via USB.
> When I plug the phone in nothing mounts, so it seems like there
> is nothing to be done before unplugging it, but perhaps it
> is leaving the USB driver in a weird state? (I am not
> expecting it to sleep while the phone is actually plugged in).
>
> Does anyone have any ideas for further investigation? I know
> very little about USB issues.

I would definitely have a look for anything suspicious in your console
and system logs.

Viewing System and Console Logs

1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.

2. From the Console menu bar, select File > View System Log and File >
View Console Log. The system log will usually give you an indication as
to what is causing startup issues. The console log can show issues you
experience after you are logged into your user account.

3. If a particular application is crashing, you may find a crash log in
/Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ for that application.

4. Feel free to send the logs to jolly roger at pobox dot com if you
need help understanding them. I'll be glad to take a look and tell you
what I see.\
My friend's Powerbook Titanium (so fairly ancient, and with a dead PRAM
battery) has lately developed a bad habit of not always waking from
sleep.

It will often wake ok, but on other occasions pressing a key turns the
sleep light off, but the screen remains black.

Does anyone know the cause and cure of this. It shouldn't be a PRAM
battery issue, as that is long-standing and this is new. The PB is
running on mains power, and is on 10.4.9
May I express my thanks to Jolly Roger, Tacit, Matt Neuburg, and Paul Nevai.

You all have been very helpful in pointing me toward a resolution of the
problem with my G5 failing to shut down or restart normally.

My drive is the one that came with the G5 but some months ago I had
installed Speed Tools that came with another drive that I purchased from OWC
awhile back. It may be that it is an old version that is incompatible with
Tiger?

In any case, after some difficulty finding all the pieces¹ of the program

Generally, I leave my G5 on 24/7 so I seldom have occasion to do a shutdown.
On the few occasions that I had problems earlier this spring, I just assumed
it was an error of some sort that caused it. I was always able to turn it
> I¹m running OS X (10.4.9) on a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM.
>
> Recently it has been failing to shut down completely. It closes all open
> windows, ends all running applications, etc. and then just hangs. The only
> way I can get it to power off or to restart is to press the power switch.
>
> I thought maybe I¹d try repairing the boot disk, but I can¹t get the
> computer to start up from a CD/DVD. It puts the silver Apple on the screen
> along with a few extraneous lines here and there, then just hangs.
>
> Any ideas how to solve my problems? Thanks.

I would look at the system log to see what errors are posted there.
It's possible an item in /Library/StartupItems/ is misbehaving.
> I have more information on my sleep problem on my G4 running 10.4.9.
>
> I try putting my computer to sleep in the following ways.
>
> 1. I select Sleep from the Apple menu.
> 2. I press the Power button momentarily on the front of the Mac.
> 3. From the log-in window during startup, I press the back arrow and select
> Sleep
>
> In every case, the cursor disappears, the keyboard stops functioning. I have
> to reboot in order to get going again. The screen looks the same as before
> the sleep attempt except for the lack of a cursor. My optical mouse stays
> lit. The screen does not go into the low power mode. I still have to see if
> the Energy Saver will kick in under those circumstances if I wait long
> enough.
>
> If I let the Energy Saver kick in, the screen goes dark. Waking up from that
> state seems to work OK.
>
> I have booted from a version of 10.3 on a different drive. The same problem
> occurs.
>
> I have used Disk Warrior and other techniques to purge my drives of errors.
> I now get a clean bill of health. I have reinstalled 10.4.9. Nothing helps.
> I will try removing everything from my startup folder.
>
> I cannot see how reformatting my main drive and reinstalling the system will
> help under these circumstances. Can it be a hardware failure somewhere?
>
> What now?

Does this happen under every user account?

Have you tested it under a different login?

Sleep/Wakeup problems?

I am using a late G4 desktop running 10.4.9. It happens in several ways.

One way is that I put my computer to sleep pressing the power button once
(It is set up to do so). I hear a click from the computer (relay?) as if it
goes to sleep, but the screen stays illuminated. My cursor disappears. I
cannot wake up the computer by pressing a key.

I will try something else, but I want to send this cry for help first.

I am thinking that I might have to reinstall the system because some files
got damaged.
> >My Mac Mini, version OSX 10.4.9, refuses to shut down correctly. The monitor
> >displays a grey screen telling me I must switch off the Mini using the power
> >button.
>
> This sounds like a kernel panic. Did you read the screen in detail? Try
> running DiskWarrior and/or TechTool Pro and scan the disk. One of the
> many possible causes of kernel panics (and a common one) is minor to moderate
> disk corruption.
>
> >I humbly obey but, when I switch on again, an annoying message tells
> >me that the damned thing shut down unexpectedly. A minor and trivial niggle,
> >I'm sure, but is there anything I can do to sort it?
>
> Fix the underlying problem that is causing the kernel panic. Start with
> the disk repair programs mentioned above. Let us know what happens after
> that....

Why? Kernel panics seem to be caused by poor drivers often in connection
with sleep. Ever since I turned computer sleep off (but keep screen
sleep), I haven't had any.
> The only thing that happened around that time was a phone call I
> received that went to my answering machine and the caller hung up before
Do you have a modem and is it hooked up? If so, it might have been:

System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Options -> "Wake when the modem

That was certainly true here. As a result I'd got into the habit of
leaving the CD tray open when not in use.
Keyboard command for sleep

For a G3 iMac with 10.4.9: I always used to put the Mac to sleep by
pressing Control-Eject. All of a sudden this shortcut won't work and I
need to choose Sleep from the Apple menu.

Why is this? Could I have disabled the command somehow? Is it a result
of installing various updates to the system?

Thanks,

How to stop start up items automatically?

--
Hi All

I have setup a profile to run my back ups from. running OSX 10.4.9 backing up
to external firewire using SuperDuper. I have the system scheduled to start
up on sundays, SuperDuper to run and shot down the system. Is there a way to
run some kind of script or script and hook so that profile and only that
profile start up without running the start up items?.... I'm fairly new to
Mac and have never worked with scripts and hooks.. but by what I've read so
far it seems the way to go. but have no idea in where to start..
So if some one can give some directions or point in the right direction it
will be greatly appreciated.

UPS + 10.4

Hi, Can anyone recommend a brand of Uninterruptible power supply that
works well with OSX 10.4?
I'm thinking of the ones that have a usb port and software to shut down
the mac cleanly if the UPS kicks in.
...

Hi All.

Is there a way (liket a start up script) to have the profile that is
auto logging in start in... I think is called safe mode like when you
hold the shift key down so the start up items don't start..?? without
having to be at the system to hold down the key?? ..... I'm running
10.4.8

TIA
Hve an Intel MacPro. Sys 10.4.8. I had power failure for a few
seconds. Now on start up I get login panel asking for name and
password. It will not accept what I know to be correct. I have run disk
utility from original system CD: no probs found. Have Zapped PRAM. Have
repaired permissions. Have repaired disk: no repairs necessary. Have
run fsck in single user mode. No probs found. Have tried safe boot.
Still i get login panel but no further. Any ideas very welcome.

Eudora prevents Intel Mac Sleep

Hi-

I'm using Eudora 6.2.4 (paid) on an Intel 10.4.8. Having Eudora
"running" prevents the computer from sleeping, although the display does.

Quitting Eudora allows sleep. Manually selecting sleep from the Apple
menu works. Eudora only checks for mail every 60 minutes, while the
Energy Saver is set up to sleep in 30 minutes. I've found several
reports of this on other forums (including this occurring with Eudora
set up for only manual checks), but no solutions.

Can anyone assist with a cure or work around?

Thanks in advance.
