G3 Lombard battery charging problem

The battery only seems to charge with the machine shutdown.

Help please, I have recently purchased a brand new battery for my G3 laptop. The battery only seems to charge with the machine shutdown. When the machine is running with the mains adapter connected, the green battery leds flash, the battery indicator on the menu bar shows the battery is charged. If the mains lead is disconnected the battery indicator says "calculating" then the machine goes dead in a few minutes. I normally run Macos 10.3

Under macos 9 I have used the battery reset application which appears to solve the problem for one recharge of the battery. But the problem returns when the battery is empty.

Many thanks in anticipation

I had a similar problem with mine after upgrading from Jaguar to Panther.

What worked for me was zapping the PRAM.

You might also try resetting the power manager. Quoting from the Service Manual (http://ftpmac.free.fr/ftp/pb_g3_series_bronze.pdf):

"PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard)computers have a reset button located on the back of the computer behind the I/O door. Press the button once to reset the power manager."
