G4 slow typing, and iMac sleep of death

2 questions, much obliged if anyone can help:

  • new G4 867, OS9.2. typing is very, very, slow. everything else runs fine, but there is an unbelievable lag in the keyboard. it feels like it's echoing on a 14K line from somewhere very far away. this is true in any app and in the Finder as well, but is worse in some than others. for instance, simpletext just feels sluggish ... Netscape, Explorer, CodeWarriior and Director feel like swimming in molasses, and Word will only update the screen every 10 words or so. before i go extension-hunting and installing, anyone come across this before or have some suggestions?

  • old iMac, OS8.6 falls asleep and never awakens. this is the original iMac, about 3 yrs old. when it goes to sleep it doesn't wake up, or more specifically the dispay doesn't wake up. also, shutting down doesn't really shut down: whether from the power button, keyboard, or shutdown command, it looks like it shuts down but the power light stays green. on booting again, gets the startup sound and usual boot process but again display doesn't wake up. only solution is unplugging, waiting, then it boots fine.

thanks,

This is a fairly well known problem. I believe it has to do with sleep and disk drivers. In my case, it is due to the internal Zip drive. It can be cured (for me) by inserting a cartridge into the drive.

Open Keycaps. See if it thinks a key is stuck down. But more likely is an extension conflict.

This sounds like a power supply problem. I assume it does the same when booting from CD?
