G5 sleep issue

When I put it to sleep the display will darken but the G5 does not sleep.

I have a new dual 1.8 G5. When I put it to sleep the display will darken but the G5 does not sleep. It also does not obey the energy preference to sleep when idle for a certain amount of time.

I have tried the sleep command with all devices disconnected and run Apple hardware test (no fault found) with no success.

This G5 is a replacement for a unit that I returned as DOA - the previous G5 slept without any issue and no changes have been made to the system ( as in applications insalled, hardware added, etc).

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

G5 DP1.8, 2GB ram, 2xinternal HD, 10.3.5 and all other Apple updates installed.

Two notions spring to mind:

  1. There may be something legitimately wrong with the machine. A reset of the PMU may resolve what is, essentially, a power-management issue. Check Apple's support pages for more info.

  2. It's possible for software or hardware to disable that behavior, sometimes even without intent. You may want to take a peek at any background processes you've got running.

As a simple experiment, try to confirm whether the insomnia persists even if you're not logged in.

Ok, I found the problem, I have a Sonnet Allegro FW800 PCI card installed - as soon as I removed it the G5 sleeps as it should.

I have searched the Sonnet site and also the Apple support forums to try to find a resolve without success - can somone assist with a suggestion to allow the G5 to sleep withg a PCI card installed?

Thanks in advance for assistance.
