A few days ago I upgraded to OS 9.1. Now the sleep and shut down seem to have stopped working. Not only that but althought the cursor will more it will not iniatate any functions. I must use the reset button to get my cursor back. I can't seem to find any help on the Apple site. Any assistance/suggestions would be appreciated..

More like reinstall the system. Something did not go correctly in the update. Or you have a Conflict Catcher no-new-extensions set getting in the way, or both. If you want to start with less draconian tactics, I would at least run Tech Tool Pro or DiskWarrior and REPLACE the desktop, which can be accomplished with either TTP or File Buddy.
