I have a problem with leopard and my friend has it also very similar (he has updated from tiger and I have clean install). The problem is with waking up mac after it has been closed. In majority, everything wakes up but screen remains black. The only one possible solution for this is to hard reset machine. I suspect leopard for some bug but not sure about this. Have you maybe encounter problem like this?

I have had similar problems when I went from Tiger to Leopard on my G4. I tried to get Apple to take the problem seriously. In one way or another, the problem has been reported many times on many models. I do not think that Apple could care less.
Then I read somewhere that Leopard was really designed to go with the Intel processors. I caved and got a new Mac Pro. I must say that I have not had a system freeze or other failure in the little more than three months I have had it. Applications have failed, but the system seems rock solid. That is not to say that I like everything about it.
So are we seeing Apple taking a page from Microsoft? Apple is now making money off of its own failures.

Thanks for info Bill. I have also Mac Pro with intel and have this problem :/ Hope they will fix it in some sys update.

I experience this "wake to a black screen of death" sometimes with my MacBook Pro and Leopard 10.5.2 -- I have things set to require a password to wake from sleep; most of the time the password prompt shows immediately, but once in 10x it's the BlackSOD.
But there's a catch... Go get a cup of coffee... In my case, the password prompt shows a minute or a couple of minutes later. Literally a couple of minutes which is far longer than you can stand to wait looking at the black screen.
I asked at the Genius Bar... "Oh, don't worry, the OS may have a lot to do upon wake-up, maybe writing out all of virtual memory or something." Seems to me it might do that before sleeping, not at wake??
I checked /var/log/system.log and there's nothing other than the usual wakeup entries.
Mystery. But, seriously, let it go for five minutes next time it happens.

LOL. It seems that better for me is to simply shut down the mac and start it normally - it takes about 90 sec :(
