I have an older iMac (a year or so old) that does the same thing at times since I installed leopard. I just push the power button. Sooner or later it starts working right for me.

The solution I'm starting to think seriously about is re-installing Tiger. Everything worked fine then.

You probably have a malfunctioning startup item. What items do you currently have in /Library/StartupItems?

Also, take a look at your system log. It will give you an indication of what's going wrong on shutdown.

Repair diskpermissions?

Repairing disk permissions isn't the answer here.

And I appreciate that, but repairing disk permissions still isn't the answer for this type of problem.
