Swapping PRAM batt. in iMac G3 - easy?

  1. Hi eveyone,

I need to replace the PRAM battery in above Mac and was wondering whether I should be able to do this on my own or better have the local Apple techs do it for me.

I googled for instructions regarding take-apart but to no avail so far. I'm comfortable opening the 7000-9000 models and the later tower G3s and -G4s but don't know anything about the original colourful iMacs.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers Martin

    Sorry, forgot to mention it's a G3, 400MHz, 10GB HD.
I think it was the generation just before the iMac DV appeared.

  5. It is justabout possible via the ram slot. Personally it only takes a few minutes longer to whip off the bottom cover and bottom shield to get at the battery so I do it that way so as not having to worry where the battery may fall if I get it wrong.

I've done it for an iMac Rev C lime - I have the instructions somewhere. Not too hard. If it's relevant, I'll dig 'em out..

  7. Thanks for the kind offer! Meanwhile I got hold of them already: <http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/#imac>

Looks straightforward, especially after following that thread on the iBook take-apart and reviewing those instructions!

  8. Good point. I rember using someone on here's patented Blue Tack And A Chopstick technique, probably because it was early days and I was chicken, but taking the next layer off as you suggest will make it much easier.
