can file sharing survive sleep?

I have two laptops connected by ethernet. Filesharing survives sleep on the iBook, which runs OS9.1, but putting the Wallstreet (OS8.1) to sleep shuts down filesharing as well. Is this the fault of 8.1? If I upgrade the Wallstreet to 9.1, will both machines remain connected during sleep? Thanks for any help.

Network connections are always dropped during sleep. More recent versions of Mac OS will automatically reconnect to shared volumes when the machine wakes up.
