Cannot Restart or Shut Down- -with a twist? Please Help.

I cannot Shut Down, or Restart from the apple menu. Initially, I would try - - and the computer would hang on me with a Kernal Panic.

Allllright. I know that this has made its rounds on the forums. And I have tried, to no avail, to follow the multitudinous bits of advice that have been given to Heron.

But I am very much at a loss.

I'm running a G4 Cube, which has been lovely to me all this time- - and Tiger 10.4.2.

After installing Tiger 10.4 - - things have been a little sketchy.
The problem that is really getting to me?

I cannot Shut Down, or Restart from the apple menu. Initially, I would try - - and the computer would hang on me with a Kernal Panic. So I'd restart by holding down the power button, and then booting up that way.

Recently, there have been no Kernal Panics. . . This is consistent now.

every time I try to shut down, or restart, the monitor goes Black. (shutting down?) though its little light stays on, and the computer itself stays running.

I have waited 35 minutes for it to figure itself out. . . and then turned it off. . .

In the meantime, I have:

Run System Optimizer, Run Disk Utility and repaired permissions (two of which keep popping back up to be repaired, on top of the two where Tiger says: "We're using different ___", for a total of 4), reset Open Firmware (nvram and all), Booted to the Install DVD and run Disk Utility from there (Where it found nothing to repair). And tried the "Super Shutdown/Restart" program that someone recommended off of Mactracker.

I cannot restart from the DVD, I cannot restart from the Login screen, and I cannot restart from the desktop. (or shut down)

Aside from this inability to shut down and such - - the computer has been rather abysmally slow, of late! (Talking last two weeks, here)-

  • and i just don't get it. But otherwise fine.

So. If anyone has any advice, please send it my way ;0) I would be most grateful.

Thankyou!

Jason

What happens when you log out ?

If you boot from a System DVD (or CD ? However you loaded 10.4) then does it have the same problem ?

I suspect that you just have a power supply that can't turn itself off. This is one of the ways Mac power supplied fail. And you're quoting a G4 cube so I guess it's a few years old by now.

The issue was discussed in an older macfixit.com articel. You don't say what fixes you tried so I don't know whether their suggestions would be helpful.

The ma9in suggestion was to disconnect peripheral devices, and, if that worked, to update the device's firmware.

They also mentioned that sudio drivers can cause the problem.

One person fixed the problem by deleting all system caches using Cocktail.

Disk Warrior might work.

A clean reinstall of 10.4 might work, too.
