My wife just called me - her Powerbook (G4 867 10.3.3) went to sleep when she wasn't looking and won't wake up. There's no light around the power connector and (I didn't know this could happen) when she tried pressing & holding the power button IT WOULDN"T SWITCH OFF!

She's spent the last three months organising a conference which happens tomorrow (of course) and this is kind of a disaster for her - she hasn't backed up since last week.

I'm going to phone Applecare, but if anyone has any advice it'd be mucho appreciated!

disaster's only ever happen when they can really go to town on your life...

It looks like the power brick or the mains has failed and the battery of the powerbook is now flat.

Try another appliance in the mains socket. Try another power brick if you can get to one. Ditto battery

Just in case the diagnosis is wrong, you might try forcing a restart with ctrl-cmd-power.

I've noticed that the power connector is a bit flaky sometimes on my PB

  • it can require jiggling about, or even unplugging everything and re-plugging.

When mine went a bit odd, and wouldn't wake up, I pressed apple-v (I don't know why this worked though) and it woke up ok.

I've had this a few times and it always turned out to be a drained battery. Someone has already suggested the power leads may be flakey, and I have certainly noticed that too. It just blinks it's little white light at you whilst you drive yourself mad...

Unplug it, plug it in somewhere else, and press the power button. Oh and cross fingers, etc...

You're right - 2nd power supply we've had fail in two months :-(

I was pretty floored by it not switching off, I suppose I thought this would always work. I ran out the house with our spare battery (darn, only two lights showing) and swapped them over - instant switch to one light blinking (d'oh must charge spare battery)

I went in to John Lewis and the guy there gave me the power supply from one of their display models in exchange - now that's service. So all's well. Thanks for the speedy answers. I'm off to buy a spare PSU.

Thanks again
