ibook will only start after zapping PRAM

My ibook recently exhibit a weird behavior...it will only start if I zap the PRAM a couple of times. If I don't it would lock up.

I tried removing the memory module, but that didn't help. It would also do the same thing on battery or when plugged in.

any hint on what would be causing the problem?
