iMac G5 with narcolepsy

We've got a 17inch iMac G5 at work that keeps falling asleep in the afternoons. No, really.

Symptoms are that it's making a wind noise like a gas turbine engine and then will spontaneously sleep itself mid-use. Waking it up again, it will usually immediate go back to bed.

All in all it's not dissimilar from myself.

Sounds like there's some sort of hardware fault (perhaps heat? cpu fan?) and it's going into self-preservation mode. Is this something anyone else here has seen?

drew.

I'm not an apple engineer (no kidding ;-)) but I would not switch it on again until you have found and fixed the cause of the problem. It sounds like the CPU is overheating. Start by opening it up. Have a good look around the heatsink/CPU area to make sure they are still 'friends'.

Sounds like it's overheating - check Console (in Applications>Utilities) and look for "Thermal Overrun" events. If this is happening, call Apple.

Yes, I think you're right. The system.log is full of these:

Yep, hardware/firmware fault. Ring Apple.

Cheers,
