I have an iMac g3 400 with OS 9.2.2 that has a strange problem with using the power button to put it in sleep mode.
I press the power button the screen goes grey, and after about 5 seconds the screen makes a comeback (somewhat) then after another 5 seconds a full comeback.
Problem is, the menu that asks if I want to cancel or sleep never appears like most of the other iMacs of this type that I've seen.
Anyone want to venture a guess as to why this is happening?

The button on the Mac or on the keyboard?

Usually this sort of thing is caused by a USB device; try unplugging all the USB thingies (except Apple KB and mouse) and see if it still happens. No USB hubs either.
But it might be a busted Apple KB or mouse.
Could be a background process too.

Try Control + the power button on the KB (or Control + the Eject key).
