I'd like to hear comments on the following experience I had a with a Mac Power Book G3. What kind of problems could it indicate and what are my options for rectifying them.
The unit seemed to power-up okay but I could not turn it off. I finally closed the lid and tended to something else. When I re-opened the lid, the screen remained black. I tried pressing a number of keys and buttons but the most that did was cause some beeping. At one point, a voice asked me if I really wanted to shut-down but there was no way for me to respond, since the screen was black. (I tried saying 'yes' on the off-chance that it would recognize voice). Throughout this time, I could hear that the unit was powered, despite the completely black screen.
Finally, for no apparant reason, the screen came on again and I was able to shut-down the unit.
Note: I described the following in a longer post which (regrettably) was cross-posted to alt.martketting.online.ebay and comp.sys.laptops. I decided it would be best to post the above, separately, here. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Inquirer-
I've had the same thing happen with my PB G4. It has only happened twice about a year ago, but not recently. Perhaps it is a common problem that was addressed by one of the System Upgrades.
The "answer" about how to shut it down, is to hold the power button for five seconds or longer. After that, it should start up again normally.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I just wanted to thank you for this info., it was very helpful.
Also, I saw somewhere else the instruction to just press the button to increase the brightness if the screen doesn't come on- something which has happened more than once. I tried it and it worked.'Reply' field invalid. Please reply to group. Thank you.
