I have a G4 500 which I upgraded to a Giga Designs 1450 Mhz and everything worked fine for a while but a couple of days ago, my power supply blew [electric smell and UPS back up registered an overload - some kind of short i guess]. Anyway, the computer is dark. The power supply replacement parts for my model were: 661-2303 ,237 watt [or OEM 614-0108] , but these things are $230, and I don't want to spend that kind of money to find out that my board is also fried. I was wondering if other apple style used power supplies [340 - 400 watts, or 208 w] could be substituted, e.g., or if there is a PC supply that might fit [some of these sell for $29!]. I can't even find a cheap used one on ebay to test my machine.
Any ideas appreciated. Any any possibility that the upgraded processor made for this machine would have strained the power supply? The machine is going on 5 years old I guess, but had one power supply replaced under warranty about a year ago.

Is this a common problem with processor upgrades?
Surely there is 3rd party power supply that will work.
NO! You cannot use a 3rd party supply like a PC ATX Supply. The Apple Supply has different voltages and pinouts and you WILL fry the mainboard. Your best bet is eBay actually. Sounds like a "Gigabit Ethernet" G4 apple to me. Does it have Gigabit networking installed? 10/100/1000? It should. Expect to pay $100 for a used power supply on eBay for that machine. Otherwise shell out the $230 for the correct one.
