I've been using this old powerbook for a gps in the car using Delorme Street Atlas. Worked great until I splashed it with coffee while it was asleep and closed. Have not been able to restart it since and this was two weeks ago.
Took it to an Apple store genius today and he tried to reset the power manager. That failed and he suggested the internal backup battery might have failed. Also suggested I try removing the battery and leaving it unplugged for 24 hours and then trying again.
Tonight, the computer was still in the case I took it in to the Apple store. Spontaneously, it started to hum and upon examination it was still off, but the speaker was vibrating. With the battery removed and the PB unplugged the sleep light stays on and on and on.........so it must be the back up battery that's powering it? Holding the reset button in turns the light off, but on release the light again begins to glow.
Any suggestions?

My G3 experienced the same symptom when its keyboard failed (after some water spray). Don't know if the 1400 would have the same response to a shorted keyboard. Maybe try booting it with the keyboard dis-connected.
