remove the battery of the laptop and use the laptop as a desktop machine ?

In order to maximize the battery's lifetime, I want to remove it and never shut the machine down and put it in suspend mode.

Greetings,

I plan to buy a mac pro book intel dual core and use it as my main computer in repalcement of my current linux desktop.

In order to maximize the battery's lifetime, I want to remove it and never shut the machine down and put it in suspend mode. I will only use the battery when travelling.

What's your opinion about these 2 things ?

Many thx for your advice !

I've been using an old Pismo laptop plugged into the wall for the last three years and leave it on all the time. I only restart it occasionally after it craps out on something or after a power outage. I use sleep mode the rest of the time when I'm not actually working on it. I leave the battery out and only charge it up and use it on the very seldom time that I take the Pismo out with me. It's been flawless for me.

The only problem with this scheme is that you lose out on the fact that the battery effectively gives you UPS protection in the cae of a black out or brown out. If it's more important to you to extend battery life than to protect your unsaved work in the case of a problem with the electricity supply then go ahead. Personally I'd rather not risk it.

I do this with the batter (second one, used) on my Pismo. It's sitting outside the laptop not doing anything. I got tired of watching the lights on the battery show up when it was 'charging' a couple of times a day. But I have it plugged into a UPS so I don't worry about power going out, at least for the short term.

One other thing, and this depends on the laptop, the battery provides ballast. Some PowerBooks I've used were very close to tipping over with the battery out.
