Uninterrupted power supplies

They'll only need to keep going for a couple of minutes after the main power cuts out. Any advice, recommendations?

Hi folks,

I need to get a couple of these - the power supply round my way is a bit interruptable at the moment. So I need two units, one to power two Macs (G4 & G5 towers) a printer and an ADSL modem, and another for a G5 iMac and an Ethernet hub. They'll only need to keep going for a couple of minutes after the main power cuts out. Any advice, recommendations?

We had a 30 sec power cut last night. The APC mumble something little UPSies kept our phone switch, 3 alphaservers, 2 linux firewalls, cisco router, and microwave comms thingy alive. The battery in my Powerbook did not miss a beat, but 2 Vaxes, 1 Mac 8500, a couple of PC horrid things and one Alpha workstation all of which are not protected rebooted themselves quite happily. These APC mumble whatevers' batteries are now about 5 years old. I was quite pleased.

Have a look at Maplins or Dabs for the current models of these things. Ours are so old they are no longer made, yet still do an excellent job, even if they do make a noise like a smoke alarm when the mains goes away.

That 119 days is a bit slack I know. We got sloppy with our upgrade to V7.3-2 and broke the cluster. The other Alphaserver is our public web server (www.yrl.co.uk) and sits outside the firewalls. Please excuse the obfuscated node names, I don't want to make it too easy for the s-kiddies.

Hi Rev,

I bought one last week from Dabs for GBP 32.18. Quicklinx 3L1TWS. I've just checked dabs.com and they've gone up to GBP 37.81 now though. :-/

It powered my Linux server / ADSL router / Netgear switch / Mini-ITX firewall for about 5 minutes the other day when I had to turn the power off to do some electrical work.

Here's all you need to know.

Probably not anywhere near the cheapest, but definitely one of the best.

I've been using an IBM one that was on sale at Staples a couple of years ago. I recently heard that the PCWorld component centre website had some at a good price (~£30 iirc). Arthur
